Visiting the Travertines: Practical Tips
Pamukkale's dazzling white terraces are one of Turkey's most photographed sights. A little planning makes the visit far more comfortable — here is what to know.
1. Shoes off
To protect the delicate calcite, you must walk the travertines barefoot. The surface is uneven and slippery in places, so take it slowly and carry your shoes in a small bag.
2. When to go
Arrive early or late to avoid crowds and harsh midday glare. Sunset turns the white terraces gold and is the most magical time for photos.
3. Combine with Hierapolis
Your ticket also covers the ancient city of Hierapolis on the plateau above — allow time for the theatre and, if you fancy it, a swim in Cleopatra's thermal Antique Pool.
