Navigating the Grand Bazaar Like a Local

With over 4,000 shops, the Grand Bazaar can feel overwhelming. A few simple tips turn it from chaotic to genuinely fun.

1. Know the layout

The bazaar is loosely organised by trade — jewellers, leather, textiles, ceramics. Pick up a free map at an entrance and use the main covered street, Kalpakçılar, to orient yourself.

2. The art of bargaining

Haggling is expected and friendly. Start well below the asking price, stay relaxed, and be ready to walk away — you will often be called back with a better offer.

3. Take a break

Duck into one of the historic hans (courtyards) for a Turkish tea or coffee when it all gets too much. It is the best way to soak up the atmosphere without the hard sell.
